Vintage Newspaper Printing Plates, Antique Keys

**********************************

Next Country Joe's Consignment Auction is Saturday Feburary 14th at the American Legion Post, New Egypt, N.J. Auction starts at 4 pm, preview 3 pm or earlier. Consignment accepted on day sale 7am - 3pm. Email info@countryjoesauction.com for more info.

Spent some time yesterday adding some vintage razors, postcards and other assorted stuff to the shop. Was going to head out to a moving sale but figured it was a bit further away from here and the ad don't look that interesting. Plus it was 19* out at that time. So, went and had another cup of coffee instead.

Added some more vintage newpaper printers plates to the shop. Many years ago (about20) I bought about 200+ of these from a dealer who said they came from a newspaper in Philadelphia, most of the little kraft envelopes they were in were marked 1972. Still have little stacks of them that show up in boxes of stuff in the Zillion Item Hoard of mine.

The Printers Plates look sort of interesting ... I never knew these as collectibles. I clicked over to your online store, looks like you have a lot of great vintage items for sale. Good luck with the upcoming auction.

Could you explain how these printers plates were originally made? Was it an acid etching process on copper plates? How did they burn the photo image onto the plate?

Thank you for the education!

Info from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intaglio_(printmaking)
Intaglio (pronounced in-TAL-yo, IPA: [ɪn'tælɪəʊ]) is a family of printmaking techniques in which the image is incised into a surface, known as the matrix or plate. Normally, copper or zinc plates are used as a surface, and the incisions are created by etching, engraving, drypoint, aquatint or mezzotint. Collographs may also be printed as intaglio plates. To print an intaglio plate, ink is applied to the surface and then rubbed with tarlatan cloth to remove most of the excess. The final smooth wipe is often done with newspaper or old public phone book pages, leaving ink only in the incisions. A damp piece of paper is placed on top and the plate and paper are run through a printing press that, through pressure, transfers the ink from the recesses of the plate to the paper.
